I’ve always believed fries were designed as a delivery mechanism for ketchup. So how would I react to frozen fries with the flavoring baked in? That was a question I asked myself when Alexia Foods invited me to sample their new Parmesan Lemon Waffle Fries.
Alexia is known as a company who thinks differently about the frozen products they create for all to enjoy. Selected by popular vote as part of a promotion dubbed “Reinvent a Classic,” the company provided customers the opportunity to determine which new product would be developed for early 2012. (I participated in the same promotion last year for the 2013 product, but sadly did not make the final cut.)
These are not just any ordinary baked fries you would wad up and throw at your kid sister. I was pleasantly surprised to find large crispy waffle cut delights after the allotted baking time; plus they held up well in the delivery of ketchup. Equally surprising was how balanced the flavor was throughout (without ketchup). I expected the lemon to have more zing and a slightly saltier texture from the parmesan. Even the pickiest of family members should give them a try.
Like a classic black dress, these fries can be dressed up or down for whatever the occasion requires. There is no question they work well in a supporting role for dinner. Consider serving waffle fries instead of hash browns at brunch. Or toss them with mixed greens, grilled steak and lemon vinaigrette for a hearty salad.
